The decade overall - Indianapolis Star

Posted: 31 Dec 2009 03:47 AM PST

(3 of 3)

Most uplifting do-over: Crispus Attucks finally gets its due

In 1955, Crispus Attucks' team was the first all-black group to win a state high school basketball championship. But Indianapolis officials feted the team with only a hurried parade in fear of racial violence. Fifty years later, in 2005, the team, led by NBA great Oscar Robertson, received its due and a fitting parade.

Most bizarre tale of the rich and infamous: Marcus Schrenker bails out

Schrenker, accused of bilking hundreds of thousands from investors, was arrested in January after police said he tried to fake his own death by bailing out of his plane over Alabama. The plane, set on autopilot, later crashed in Florida.

Two for the record books: Tallest, oldest women die

Less than three months apart in 2008, the world's tallest woman and world's oldest woman died in Shelbyville -- where they both happened to live in the same nursing home. Edna Parker was 115 years and 220 days old. Sandy Allen was 7 feet, 71/4 inches tall.

Disasters, naturally: Twisters and torrents wreak havoc

In November 2005, an early morning tornado ripped through an Evansville trailer park, killing 23 people. In June 2008, 7 inches of rain fell in one 24-hour period, leading to massive flooding, especially in Johnson and Morgan counties. In all, more than 8,000 Hoosiers had to be evacuated.

Disaster, man-made: The Cosmopolitan on the Canal blaze

The Cosmopolitan on the Canal arson fire in March caused $20 million in damage and was the worst fire in Indianapolis in 20 years. The 340,000-sqaure-foot residential and retail complex was in mid-construction -- and is now being rebuilt.

Indiana's 15-second famous: Survivor' and the fittest

Who could have predicted back in 2000 that two of the best-known "celebrities" to emerge would be a reality TV survivor and a sandwich company pitchman? Way to go, Rupert and Jared.

Top Michiana stories of 2009 - WNDU

Posted: 31 Dec 2009 04:08 AM PST

As 2009 comes to a close, we're looking back on the stories that made headlines here at home. There were plenty of moments we won't soon forget from presidential visits, to high unemployment, a new hospital and a new Notre Dame football coach.

FIRST OUT-OF-STATE TRIP TO A CONTROVERSIAL SPEECH
2009 began with a new president and he didn't waste any time making his way to Michiana to help turn the economy around. "Folks here in Elkhart and all across America need help right now, they can't afford to keep waiting for folks in Washington to get this done," said President Obama in his first major speech as president at Concord High School in February. It would be his first of three stops in Michiana over the next seven months, including a visit in May that made world-wide headlines. Notre Dame welcomed the pro-choice president to speak at the school's commencement ceremony. Protesters surrounded and even flew over the campus for weeks, showing their anger of the school's invitation.

HIGH UNEMPLOYMENT
It was an extremely tough year for Elkhart County and more specifically the RV industry. People lined up at libraries and WorkOne to file for unemployment benefits. However, just last month there were signs things were beginning to turn around as a few companies, including Heartland RV, began hiring hundreds of workers back. The state of Michigan also saw high unemployment, mostly attributed to the auto industry.

INMATES ESCAPE FEDERAL PRISON
In July, three inmates escaped from the Michigan City prison. Two convicted murderers and one convicted rapist flew the federal prison coop through underground tunnels. All three men were later captured, including one who was caught at gunpoint near Chicago Mayor Richard Daley's home in New Buffalo. Two guards and a maintenance foreman were fired by the Indiana Department of Corrections because of the incident.

SGT. JEFFREY SHAW KILLED ON THE JOB
In November, Kosciusko County Sheriff's Deputy Jeffrey Shaw was killed when a truck hit his squad car. Sgt. Shaw was the first Indiana police officer to die in the line of duty in 2009. More than 800 people attended Shaw's funeral to pay their respects. He leaves behind a wife, 9-year-old son, and 7-year-old daughter.

FALLEN SOLDIERS
We lost some brave men who fought for our country. Sgt. Daniel Frazier, Staff Sgt. Justin DeCrow, and Specialist Paul Andersen each paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. Frazier was killed during a suicide bombing in Afghanistan while saving more than 40 lives from the attack. DeCrow died in the horrific shooting rampage at Fort Hood. Andersen was killed by indirect gunfire in Iraq.

A NEW HOSPITAL
On December 14, the Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center moved from downtown South Bend to Mishawaka. It took 7 years from the announcement to the grand opening. The 658,000-square foot facility cost more than $350 million and has more than 320 inpatient and outpatient beds. The hospital has been part of the Michiana community for more than 125 years.

BISHOP TRANSITION
After 24 years in service, Bishop John D'Arcy will step down from the Ft. Wayne-South Bend Diocese. As required, Bishop D'Arcy submitted his resignation when he turned 75. He's now 77. Bishop Kevin Rhoades from Pennsylvania will take over on January 13. Bishop Rhoades is fluent in Spanish and has an impressive track record of being a mentor for men considering the priesthood.

OUT WITH THE OLD, IN WITH THE NEW
With a poor season behind them and a new coach taking the reins, the Fighting Irish is looking back at the year with mixed emotions. "It's time to move forward because it is critical to this program and to its place in this University and college football that we compete at the highest level, that we compete for National Championships," said Athletic Director Jack Swarbrick as he announced Charlie Weis was fired as the football head coach. After a 5-season record of 35-27, the Weis era came to an end and the Kelly era began. The Irish Catholic from Massachusetts packed his bags in Cincinnati and headed to the Golden Dome, bringing with him a passion for the blue and gold.

HIGH SCHOOL RIVALRY
Jaws dropped and chaos ensued as a winning streak 29 years in the making came to an end at Steele Stadium. The crowd went wild as the Mishawaka Cavemen beat the Penn Kingsmen for the first time in nearly three decades. But that wasn't it; the Cavemen were double trouble as they conquered the Kingsmen a second time for the 5-A Sectional title a month later.

HEADED TO ATLANTA
It's one of the few places you'll find the likes of Lou Holtz, Troy Aikman, and Jerry Rice in the same room. The heart of downtown South Bend for sports lovers is on the move after 14 years of welcoming football fans. A letter from the National Football Federation confirmed the news that the College Football Hall of Fame is headed to Atlanta. The date of that move has yet to be announced.

TACKLING A RECORD
Emotions ran high as a Michigan wrestling coach made state history with a record 735 winning matches. Bruce Bittenbender has coached young athletes at Lakeshore for four decades. His landmark win gives the title of all-time winningest high school wrestling coach in Michigan. From there, Bittenbender stands 20 wins away from setting the national record for wrestling wins.

IRISH HOOPS
Coach Muffett McGraw got a surprise celebration from family, friends, fans, and players as she dunked her 500th win since becoming the Notre Dame women's basketball coach. A big part of that milestone has been freshman star Skylar Diggins. The South Bend Washington grad is just one piece of the Irish puzzle that's tearing up the hardwood, making them the #3 team in the country. Meanwhile, with the men's team, a big milestone comes just as the year closes. On Wednesday, head coach Mike Brey celebrated his 200th win with the Irish. The team is lead by senior captains Luke Harangody and Tory Jackson.

A NEW HOME
From basketball, to volleyball, this year Notre Dame athletic teams have a brand-new home: the Purcell Pavilion. From start to finish the project cost $35 million. There's new seating, new lights, and a re-designed floor. Named for a Notre Dame grad who forked over a large chunk of cash to build it, Purcell Pavilion went from dream to reality in about six months.

BIG GOALS
The Notre Dame women's soccer team made it to the Final Four for their fourth consecutive year. Unfortunately, they didn't come home with the trophy, as they lost to North Carolina in the semi-finals. The Tarheels ended up winning the national title.

There were also many big talkers nationally this year. To read about those and more on my "Year in Review", head to my blog.
