ECU fans begin trek to watch football team in the Liberty Bowl

Memphis business owner Silky O'Sullivan says there's a purple tsunami coming his way — and the local football fans are excited.

Sullivan said he was in his bar, Silky O'Sullivan's, on Dec. 5, watching the C-USA Championship game on TV when ECU's Van Eskridge intercepted what would've been a touchdown pass for Houston.

"Fifty people leaped up in the air and started yelling because ECU was coming," he said.

Today, the 7,000 ECU fans who purchased tickets for Saturday's Auto Zone Liberty Bowl against Arkansas will begin making their way to Memphis, Tenn., by car, bus, RV and plane. And many of them might not know what to expect.

At least, that's how student Bogie Winn felt last year when he first arrived. Winn began attending ECU football games after his dad moved him to Greenville, and says he hasn't missed more than one home game in the last 11 or 12 years. This will be his second consecutive year rooting for the Pirates in Memphis.

"Where they've come to now, to them I guess, the accomplishment puts the fun back into the game," Winn said.

And last year, when he arrived in Memphis, he said he was surprised to find himself in a city of purple and gold.

"One of the best things is that the city accepts its role as host," said Steven Asby, two-time graduate, doctorate student and employee in the Academic Advising and Support Center at ECU. This will be his second year in Memphis for the Liberty Bowl, as well. "It's probably one of the better bowl experiences."

But before it's time to start tailgating, Memphis has a lot to offer those celebrating the New Year and supporting the Pirates.

"I think Memphis has a real soul to it that people love," said Josh Spotts, director of catering and events at the Madison Hotel, a small, luxury hotel with a rooftop terrace 18 stories above downtown Memphis. "And there's so much to do."

Many hotels are offering special packages for New Year's and the Liberty Bowl, and the Madison Hotel is no exception. Along with packages including room and luxury food while guests stay in the heart of the city, Spotts said the Madison also offers a Tailgate-To-Go, so guests can pick up everything they need for gameday at the front desk.

Outdoors, there is Graceland, the Memphis Zoo, the Liberty Bowl Parade on Friday, riverboat tours and riverfront parks. Francine Cooke, who is returning to the bowl with her family and friends, said that last year they made a special effort to see everything.

"Last year, we hired a driver who took us to the waterfront and local places you wouldn't know about," Cooke said, adding that newcomers should definitely try the local food — especially Memphis' own style of barbecue.

Memphis also offers downtown shopping, an arts district, the National Civil Rights Museum and, for those who want to partake in what Asby calls "pirate beverages," there's Beale Street.

Asby described Beale Street as a classier version of New Orleans' Bourbon Street. Spotts said the area has a different governance than the rest of the city, which allows bars to stay open until 4 a.m. and guests to carry open containers. But the best part, is the music.

"There's live music coming out of every door you can imagine," Spotts said. "รข€¦ That carries over into everything you see."

Some suggested Beale Street venues include Rendezvous Ribs, Rum Boogie, BB King's Blues Club and Grill 83, a part of Madison Hotel. But word has it that Pirate fans are gathering tonight at Silky O'Sullivan's.

"I am known as the international meeting place of anyone purple and gold," said Sullivan. Sullivan is a graduate of Louisiana State University, but said he became an instant Pirate fan after a one-time trip to the city some 20 years ago.

"There are three things in the world I respect: Jesus Christ, Roebuck Catalogue and Fifth Street," he said. "... Not only is it the spirit of the school (ECU), it's the people. You just feel like they're family."

So this year he's getting ready to welcome back his Pirate brethren with the usual shag music, gossip and his Purple Haze drink — and he might even share one of the Pirate Sweet Potatoes (purple potatoes from Stokes County) he received as a "thank you" gift this Christmas.

Former NFL player, Reno car salesman Rick Kane dies at 55 - Reno Gazette

Posted: 29 Dec 2009 01:12 AM PST

Richard James Kane, a former professional football player who made his home in Reno, is being remembered as a great friend and inspiration.

Kane, 55, known as "Rick," died Christmas morning at his home from complications from pneumonia, his family said.

In April 2005, Kane lost his leg after a 17-year-old girl, distracted by her cell phone, crashed into his motorcycle near McCarran Boulevard and Manzanita Lane, police said. Kane would later help start a local amputee support group, said Rick Riley, of Prosthetic Consulting Tech.

"I have been an amputee for 35 years and have been on the disabled ski team and climbed mountains," Riley said. "I get to inspire thousands of people. But from time to time, people come along who inspire me. That describes Rick Kane. He was an inspiration."

Born in Lincoln, Neb., Kane grew up loving baseball, football and basketball. He was a running back at Oregon and San Jose State before being drafted in the third round in 1977 by the Detroit Lions. He played for the Lions in 1977-83 and for the Washington Redskins in 1984-85.

Kane spent 25 years in the automotive business in Reno. He was the sales manager for 16 years at Reno Jeep Chrysler and spent the past four years at Scott Motor Co. as the Internet and fleet sales manager.

Dave Bellamy, sales manager at Scott Motors, said Kane's co-workers were in shock over his sudden death and miss him terribly.

"He had so many friends," Bellamy said. "He was just a nice guy whose greatest legacy was that people loved him, and he allowed people to become his friend. Everyone loved him."

After Kane's accident, Bellamy said his personality was not changed and that he did not complain and had a positive attitude. A prosthetic leg allowed him to live a normal life. Riley said what mattered most to Kane was being able to be "a dad" and do activities with his children.

Kane loved riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle with his wife, the outdoors and going on cross country RV trips with his family.

"Rick was a special person and was everybody's friend," said Nan Nesbitt, formerly of Reno. "If he was your friend, he was your friend for life."

He is survived by his wife of 13 years, Dianne; sons Ryan, Sean and John; daughter, Kelly and his mother, Anne Kane.

Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Lakeside Ward, 1095 Golconda Drive. Burial will follow at Mountain View Cemetery.

2011 Lexus LFA Review
As it is, the crowd-stopping coupe from Toyota City excels in other, rather more subtle areas. Like overall balance, the ability to communicate, and the transparency of the controls. While it may not look particularly light, the Lexus feels like a superfit athlete - from the free-revving engine to the responsive handling, the intuitive steering to the riveting brakes. This perception of lightness adds a new dimension of agility that only true supercars can match. Take the suspension, which offers the best of both worlds: a little understeer to warn the timid, a little oversteer to reward the brave. Take the steering, which is as genuine as your best friend's handshake. Take the reassuring brakes, which are perfectly easy to modulate.

Out of the four available drive modes that can be selected via a knob on the dashboard, we didn't try Wet for obvious reasons, and we disliked Auto for its slow and jerky action. Normal is fine for two-lane roads, but Sport adds quite a bit more spice to the drivetrain and stability control menu. It permits higher revs (the gauge starts flashing whenever the 9000-rpm redline approaches), more ambitious shift points, and a more entertaining handling balance. For a seriously aggressive cornering attitude, stability control can be switched off. But in reality, you don't want to play hooligan, because this car is more about clarity and purity than about showmanship. Gifted with a drag coefficient of 0.31 and equipped with an active tail wing, the LFA retains this dynamic unambiguity on the autobahn, where it tracks with precision; soaks up low-frequency, big-effect pavement imperfections with aplomb; and closes the challenging 150-to-200-mph gap with surprising vigor. This is a seasoned, high-speed tool that copes competently with 125-mph lane changes, 150-mph blind crests, 175-mph bends, and 200-mph stops.

Obit: Ex-pro football player Rick Kane, of Reno, dies at 55 - Reno Gazette

Richard James Kane, a former professional football player who made his home in Reno, is being remembered as a great friend and inspiration.

Kane, who went by "Rick," passed away Christmas morning at his home from complications of pneumonia, his family said. Services have been scheduled for 11 a.m., Wed., at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Lakeside Ward, 1095 Golconda Drive, in Reno. Burial will follow at Mountain View Cemetery.

2010 BMW 5-Series Review
The 2010 BMW 5 Series is looking at the tail end of its career. With a completely redesigned model just a year away, the latest 5 is facing its final curtain, but does so while still remaining a top choice for a premium midsize luxury sedan. Indeed, while newer competitors have surpassed this segment's elder statesman in certain areas, the 5 remains one of the finest vehicles in the world to travel each and every highway.

Regrets? The 5 has a few, but the most worthy to mention is iDrive, which has been harped on endlessly since its introduction in the early 2000s. For 2010, all 5 Series thankfully get the latest iDrive knob and accompanying menu buttons, but without navigation, the same old convoluted menu structure remains. We suggest opting for the navigation system, which includes the higher-resolution screen and improved iDrive menus found in the all-new 7 Series.

Other than those updates, the 2010 5 Series continues to consist of the 528i, 535i and 550i sedans and 535i xDrive wagon. Of all these, the 535i would certainly be our pick. Its twin-turbocharged inline-6 endows it with an ideal blend of seamless power and respectable fuel efficiency. This torque-rich engine pulls hard from low in its rev range and effortlessly gets this BMW up to speed. In fact, the 535i is only a few tenths slower to 60 mph than the V8-powered 550i, while returning only 1 mpg less combined than the 528i.

The strong engines, along with an ideal ride/handling balance, spacious interior and impressive build quality are still the 5 Series' core strengths. Yet it is certainly pricey, and its advanced age has put it behind the electronic times in a few areas. Also, its standard steering may be too stiff for some drivers. As such, the fully redesigned Mercedes E-Class, the sleek-looking Jaguar XF and even the very impressive Hyundai Genesis are worth close looks. But the 5 Series has faced them all and stood tall, continuing to be a favorite among our editors and shoppers alike. So although the end is near, the 2010 BMW 5 Series still does things its way.

Walkaround
The 2010 BMW 5 Series is available in sedan and wagon body styles. Three engines are available on the sedan that correspond to the three trim levels (528i, 535i and 550i), with xDrive all-wheel drive available on the 528i and 535i sedans. The wagon comes in 535i xDrive trim only.

The 528i comes standard with 17-inch wheels, a sunroof, automatic headlights and wipers, power front seats with driver memory and power headrests, a power tilt-telescoping steering column, leatherette vinyl upholstery, automatic climate control, the iDrive electronics interface and a 10-speaker stereo with a CD player and an auxiliary audio jack. The 535i adds adaptive xenon headlights and lumbar support, while the 535i xDrive wagon adds a panoramic sunroof, fold-down rear seats and a power tailgate. The 550i adds parking assist, leather upholstery and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.

Overview
The 2010 BMW 5 Series is just at home on a winding back road as it is on a leisurely cross-country road trip. Opting for either of the sport packages allows the 5 to tackle tight corners as skillfully as some dedicated sports cars. When driven aggressively, the steering has perfect weighting and a near-telepathic feel, but around town and in parking lots, it feels overly heavy. For this reason, we think casual drivers mostly interested in the 5 Series' looks, luxury and curb appeal should opt for the active steering system. Likewise, those drivers might find the ride quality to be a little stiff at times when equipped with the Sport package, but overall this BMW is a fine all-purpose luxury sport sedan.
