Can muscle cars save the U.S. auto industry? Retro Dodge Challengers ... - Gather.com

A Consumer Reports survey of 380,000 readers of its magazine and web site found that the Dodge Challenger is the car best loved by its owners.

In fact, the magazine reported, "92 percent of Challenger owners said they would definitely buy another one given the same opportunity."

Retro remakes of muscle cars of the lates '60s and '70s have been around for only a few years now, I think. Then again, didn't Pontiac try to reintroduce the GTO a few years before it went belly up? The Camaro is also back. I thought they stopped making those seven or eight years ago. Mustangs never went out of production, but now they look old again.

Don't get me wrong, these muscle cars look great, but who is buying them, and how does their production make U.S. auto makers more competitive with foreign companies? Are there that many empty-nesters who throw a new Dodge Challenger into the mix while painfully deciding between a RV or Harley-Davidson? Do retirees still have that much disposable income to blow? A senior citizen at the oil change place the other day told me he paid over 45 grand for his new Chevy Camaro. He wasn't sure how he was going to make the next loan payment, though.

You wonder why U.S. car companies need to be bailed out. You want to know what it is like to drive a Hemi Challenger? Play Test Drive or Need for Speed on your Playstation. Don't go into debt, compound our nation's credit problems and lead U.S. car companies in the direction of vanity over affordability.

Guardian Automotive Products lays off 60 - Bucyrus Telegraph Forum

Posted: 08 Dec 2009 04:07 AM PST

UPPER SANDUSKY -- Guardian Automotive Products has laid off about 60 full-time employees spread across various departments.

The business, located at 12688 Ohio 67, made the move effective Nov. 13, according to a Worker Adjustment Retraining Notification letter filed the same month with Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.

In a letter, plant manager Neale Yeomans states the layoff is involuntary and the affected individuals would be eligible for unemployment compensation. A downturn in the economy is cited as a reason for the action.

Yeomans said Monday there are 200 employees left at the facility.

A statement from Guardian Industries Corporation spokeswoman Amy Hennes said the plant will continue to run a three-shift operation in anticipation of a future rebound in business.

"Unfortunately, due to the continuing weakness in the economy and recent reductions in business volume, these cuts needed to be made," she said in the statement.

The Upper Sandusky facility supplies windshields to the RV, heavy truck, construction, bus, school bus and passenger car glass industries. The Auburn Hills, Mich.-based company makes float glass and fabricated glass and other products.

The global company employs over 19,000 employees in 21 countries and five continents, according to its Web site.
