Welcome To The IPO Bash (Revenue Optional) - Wall Street Journal Posted: 27 Nov 2009 12:48 PM PST By Josh BeckermanSome people are currently involved in guilt-influenced salad consumption, some are on Moviefone or Fandango, plotting the best strategy to avoid being shut out of the madcap "Old Dogs," since it might be Robin Williams' zaniest film since "RV." But many other folks have been hard at work, especially in the IPO business. Although recent weeks brought some disappointing debuts, the trend is veering back in the direction of "everybody have fun tonight, everybody Wang Chung tonight." Auto-industry related losses are no deterrent, as we mentioned a couple of days ago. And even a company with no revenue can hope for a billion-dollar IPO – Cobalt International Energy Inc., which filed for its IPO in September, set estimated terms on Friday, planning a 63 million-share offer priced at $15 to $17 each. The oil exploration and production company is owned by First Reserve Corp. Carlyle Group, Riverstone Holdings, Goldman Sachs Group and Kern Partners Ltd. Carlyle, Riverstone and Goldman Sachs Capital Partners invested about $500 million to help form Cobalt in late 2005. In 2006, Kern bought in, followed by First Reserve in 2007, the latter committing $350 million at the time. The four firms have invested $1.06 billion combined to acquire Cobalt Series A shares since 2006. Cobalt said that if its initial exploratory wells are successful, it expects to begin generating production revenue between 2012 and 2014 at its U.S. properties, and between 2014 and 2016 offshore Angola and Gabon. Also filing for an IPO this week was RedPrairie Holding Inc., a supply chain software company owned by Francisco Partners. It looks to raise up to $172.5 million. The firm bought RedPrairie in 2005 for $236.2 million, from Advent International Corp. and Vestar Capital Partners. The company posted revenue of $193.9 million for the first nine months of 2009, down from $221.2 million in the comparable 2008 period. Overseas, Danish telecom giant TDC, owned by Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co., Permira, Apax Partners, Blackstone Group and Providence Equity Partners, is considering going public. The company was acquired for about $16 billion in 2006. In Australia, retail chain REDgroup Retail Pty. Ltd., backed by Pacific Equity Partners, is mulling an IPO, a person familiar with the matter said this week. This barrage of IPO activity has led to a busier-than-projected workday, so we're feeling less regretful about our decision to skip last night's 1AM Pixies show at Hammerstein. -With Daniel Hausmann This content has passed through fivefilters.org. Japan auto production mixed; Honda sets record production in Asia in ... - The Gaea Times Posted: 26 Nov 2009 12:25 AM PST
Japan's global auto production mixed in October
TOKYO — Honda Motor Co. set record production in Asia and China in October for the second straight month, leading a gradual and spotty recovery at Japanese automakers. Honda, Japan's second biggest automaker, which has been relatively more resilient than some domestic rivals, reported Friday a 22.5 percent jump in October vehicle production in Asia at 86,070 vehicles, compared to the same month the previous year. Worldwide production last month for the maker of the Odyssey minivan and Fit subcompact declined 18.2 percent on-year at 301,103 vehicles, Tokyo-based Honda said. Performance was mixed at other Japanese automakers, all battered by the global financial crisis last year that sent demand plunging, especially in the key North American market. Worldwide production for Toyota Motor Corp., the world's biggest automaker, stayed flat at 785,615 vehicles in October, down 0.8 percent on-year. But global production for Nissan Motor Co., the nation's No. 3 automaker, allied with Renault SA of France, rose for the first time in 15 months, climbing 9.9 percent to 306,146 vehicles. Production at Nissan, which makes the March subcompact and Infiniti luxury models, was up across the board, led by a 63.1 percent surge in China. Nissan's production in the U.S. rose 10.3 percent and 12.6 percent in Great Britain. Hiroshima-based Mazda Motor Corp. saw October global production decline 12.1 percent to 105,953 vehicles, while Mitsubishi Motors Corp. reported a 29.6 percent slip to 85,080 vehicles. Except for Mitsubishi, which posted a 12.5 percent slide in Japan vehicle sales last month, major Japanese automakers saw growth supported by tax breaks and incentives for green and fuel efficient vehicles. Toyota's Japan sales edged up 6.7 percent in October, the third straight month of on-year improvement, as sales of Lexus luxury cars soared 63 percent from the previous year. Honda reported a 16.6 percent year-on-year rise in October vehicle sales in Japan, for the fourth straight month of increase. Nissan recorded a 15.3 percent gain, and Mazda 6.9 percent. Preview: 2011 Ford Super Duty - Vancouver Sun Posted: 26 Nov 2009 10:15 PM PST Regina, Sask. • The Canadian Western Agribition is a quarter of a million square feet of machinery, livestock and the newest technology in agriculture. This year, it's also the setting for the roll-out of the 2011 Ford Super Duty. It was here amid a sea of cowboy hats and John Deere caps that Ford execs showed off the third generation of this heavy-duty specialized truck line, first introduced in 1999. While these trucks are a standard tool in farmer and rancher stables, back then Ford had simply wanted to create a real alternative between its F-Series half-tons and its larger work trucks. But there is another reason Ford is here; in the past 10 years, the recreational hauling market has also grown to a niche that accounts for as much as 30% of total Super Duty sales. And, as farmers will tell you, they are the ones driving those numbers. Here, trucks do duty on the Prairies all summer, while, in the winter, you'll see Saskatchewan licences towing fifth-wheel RV trailers in Arizona, California and Texas. In fact, it's this group (and the ever-increasing size of their recreational trailers) that Ford says influenced its decision to build the F-450 pickup (that tows more than 11,100 kilograms) in 2008. But, for 2011, the Super Duty changes not only its tin but will also come to market next spring with two entirely new engines. Is it a plan, coincidence or stroke of luck? Whatever caused this event makes this third generation of Super Duty trucks that much more important in the continuing lineage of this brand. First, and probably most importantly, is the debut of the all-new 6.7-litre V8 Power Stroke turbodiesels. With this one, Ford enters an era of all-new diesel engine design; some might even call it radical design. For example, the exhaust manifolds reside in the valley of the V8 engine rather than outboard, while the intake is outboard where the exhaust normally is. Also, the cylinder heads are flipped around in comparison with previous V8 layouts. Why? Ford says this unique layout — an automotive industry first — has several advantages. First, the exhaust system volume is reduced, meaning air can be fed to the single turbocharger quicker for faster spool-up and reduced lag, resulting in improved throttle response. This single turbocharger is centre-mounted on a pedestal in the back of the valley, reducing vibration and noise. But this isn't a regular turbocharger, either; its dual-sided compressor wheel is faster, building the volume of air boost needed for maximum power. Ford is claiming the new 6.7L diesel will have class-leading fuel economy; but, for the moment, fuel consumption numbers are not yet available. Horsepower and torque numbers have not been released yet either, though it follows they should exceed the 350 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque of the outgoing engine. On a green note, the 6.7L diesel will also be compatible with B20 fuel, meaning it can run on mixtures of up to 20% biodiesel and 80% petroleum diesel fuel. The new standard engine (on any of the Super Duty line) will be a gasoline V8 — the 6.2L. This motor also promises more power yet with better fuel economy. (Again, we have to take Ford's word for it, as no performance numbers are available yet.) The engine is E85/flex fuel capable, meaning it can run on regular, partial or up to 85% ethanol mixed gasoline. As for getting the power to the wheels, a new 6R140 heavy-duty TorqShift six-speed automatic has been designed to handle the increased torque produced by the new diesel engine and the higher rpm of the new gasoline engine. The transmission will also come with Ford's SelectShift feature, which lets the driver shift manually. For even greater trailer control, the 2011 Ford Super Duty harnesses the power of the Power Stroke diesel, which increases engine exhaust back pressure to help slow down the vehicle and trailer. There's no button to push; the diesel powertrain calibration automatically increases the engine exhaust back pressure, making it seamless to the driver. Another feature of this transmission is an optional Live Drive Power Take Off (PTO) for diesel-equipped trucks. It's been a decade of more since the truck industry as a whole recognized the need to make truck cabs more work friendly. Features that let fleet buyers and contractors run their businesses out of their trucks have been increasing across the board, so Ford is just adding to good systems already in place. At the centre of Ford's offering is a new 4.2-inch LCD screen and a five-way button on the steering wheel that lets customers navigate through menu options that cover everything from fuel economy to towing convenience; an off-road message centre is added as well. The first drive of the new Super Duty F-Series will be held in March with availability of trucks soon after. Price and engine performance stats will be available closer to the release date of the trucks. powersports@sympatico.ca This content has passed through fivefilters.org.
