POMONA - Customers looking to get their cars serviced at Rancho Valley Chevrolet this week were shocked to learn it had closed.

The dealership shut Tuesday due to the poor economy, said Raymond Fong, Pomona's redevelopment director.

Management at the dealership would not comment Thursday.

Dealerships in Pomona have been struggling. Last year, Rio Rancho Chrysler Dodge went out of business, and in the summer West Coast RV closed.

Recently, John Boulianne, owner of the Chevy dealership, indicated to Fong that he would close.

"He indicated that it was one of the hardest decisions he had to make," he said.

The loss of sales tax generated from Rancho Valley Chevrolet, at 1 Rio Rancho Road, is significant, said Mark Gluba, assistant to the city manager.

The focus now for city officials is to look at how to redevelop the site to be able to recapture the lost income, Gluba said.

"Auto potential is going to be very limited in the near future, so we are making plans to establish retail use," Fong said.

The city owns about 12 acres adjacent to the dealership. As the economy begins to turn around over the next two years, Fong said, the city will work with Boulianne to merge both sites.

"It would be about 35 to 40 acres to really attract a retail development," he said.
