Goshen’s own ‘Everyday Hero’ - Goshen News Posted: 27 Feb 2010 06:59 PM PST Published: February 27, 2010 09:56 pm Goshen's own 'Everyday Hero' By ROD ROWErod.rowe@goshennews.com Art Henderson, who lives north of Goshen, is originally from Cincinnati where he worked for Blue Bird buses before coming to Goshen as director of customer service at Forest River RV company about 10 years ago. After four or five years with the RV company, Art started his own auto and truck repair business in 2006, named Work of Art, now on Eisenhower Drive North. Henderson explained he got the name for his company after customizing a limousine for a professional baseball player. When the ball player saw the finished product, he declared it was a "work of Art." Henderson recently received some national attention through a You Tube production by Advance Auto Parts. He is one of six mechanics from across the country featured in a program called "Everyday Heroes." The production was first shown at Advance Auto's 2010 leadership conference. The You Tube production touches on Henderson's dedications to his customers. His wife, Pam, is quoted as calling him a "doctor of automotive," because he "performs surgery on cars." The seven-minute video features street scenes from Goshen and the countryside as it shows the homes of the six professional and do-it-yourself mechanics. Henderson said he may have been chosen for the video because of his struggles to keep his business going, overcoming a near-fatal traffic accident two years ago and the charity work he performs for those who can't afford auto repairs. Isaiah 1:17 Grace Community Church, where the family attends, has a program called Isaiah 1:17, to help single or widowed people who need assistance. Henderson said once his group learned of a family where one spouse had a heart attack and the other was out of work, the house needed a furnace and their car needed work. He explained he contacted Zebell's Heating, which fixed the furnace. "We went after the car," Henderson said. "Advance Auto Parts provided the parts for almost free." In his business, Henderson has specialized in installation and repair of wheelchair lifts, as well as auto, truck and bus repairs. He explained the business at one time employed 13 people, then was down to one after his severe injuries in 2008. They're now back up to seven, Henderson said, with his entire family involved. Pam, helps with paperwork, daughter Lisa works in upholstery and Brad enjoys fixing up wrecked vehicles for re-sale. Keeping busyHenderson's shop is keeping busy because of its experience in wheelchair lifts, working on vehicles from as far away as Texas. Henderson is a master certified mechanic and his shop is the only one certified to work on Ricon and Braun lifts between Chicago and Toledo. His crew also completes school bus inspections for state officials. "We close our shop the day of the inspections," Henderson explained, so the crew can make necessary repairs on items that don't pass an inspection. In taking care of his customers, Henderson explained his shop has a trailer and will use it to rescue a vehicle, to save the owner a tow bill. "It's all about the customer," Henderson said, explaining that he sometimes takes a customer home and then picks them up after repairs are made. They have several customers who live at nearby Greencroft. Besides helping in this community, Henderson has also made trips south to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina. "In 2005, Pastor Jim Brown led a group of 15 to Mobile, where we ran chainsaws and cut up trees," Henderson said. "I spent the whole time repairing chainsaws, keeping them running One of his first mechanical jobs was working on chainsaws, he said. "We try to do whatever we can," he said of his service.

Michiana family gets free van - Fox 28 Posted: 26 Feb 2010 07:07 PM PST A Michiana family is now mobile again thanks to a generous donation. Two Michiana businesses pitched in to give an Elkhart family a new van. Mishawaka's Zolman Tires and Mike's Auto Salvage did not ask us to share this story Friday, because they say they donated parts, labor, and time to give the family a priceless donation without recognition. We convinced them it was a heartwarming story that needed to be told. This new vehicle for the Cregier family will be their only source of transportation and a bright spot in what has been a rough couple of years. "I just can't believe it," said Recipient Shelley Cregier. Friday was an unbelievable day for Elkhart's Shelley Cregier and daughter Heather. "I thought we were coming to put our van that broke down to her funeral," said Cregier. It's not just car problems. Cregier says she was laid off from the RV industry, suffers from depression and will soon have to find a new place to live. Troubles, 11year old Heather told her teacher, Stefani DeSchepper. "Heather and I have been very close. She's a very kind and loving person and works extra hard," said DeShepper. And DeSchepper did more than just lend a listening ear. "I did have the ability to make a phone call and that's really all I did," said Family Friend Stefani DeSchepper. A call to her brother Nate, the President of Zolman's Tires. "She knew they were having difficulties and if there's any type of deal or help them out anyway I could. I said absolutely," said Zolman Tires President Nate Zolman. Zolman teamed up with Mike's Auto Salvage. Employees donated parts, time, and labor to fix up this car. It was a Zolman company car that just so happens to be the same year, make, and model of the Cregier's van. "I don't know if you call it fate or what but there's definitely something that just lined up," said Zolman. And the reality of the donation is still sinking in. Shelley Cregier/Recipient"They gave us a free van, I think?" It's the simple things... "It's got a full tank of gas I just noticed that!" said Cregier. ...and the impact this surprise will make. "It means a lot because I didn't think I was worth it. I didn't think I deserved to have any help,' said Cregier. DeSchepper and Zolman both say they don't want anything in return. "That one burden off their shoulders and a sincere appreciation that's all that's necessary," said Zolman. And Cregier can't wait to return the favor. "I hope I can help somebody else," said Cregier. That's the message everyone involved in this van donation wants you to take home Friday night. Even if it's something small, give to your neighbor and don't expect anything in return.
